Ceramic plate. Numbered from the edition of 100. Stamped by Empreinte Originale de Picasso and Madoura Plein Feu Manufacturer: Madoura, Vallauris Pablo Picasso’s Visage de Faune Tourmenté (1956) is a ceramic plate produced at the Madoura workshop in Vallauris, where he explored clay as a sculptural and graphic medium. The circular surface is animated by a relief image of a faun’s face, its features exaggerated and expressive, surrounded by radiating, almost sun-like motifs. The white glaze emphasizes texture and shadow, allowing the incised and modeled forms to emerge through subtle variations in light. Numbered from an edition of 100 and stamped Empreinte Originale de Picasso, the work reflects Picasso’s fascination with mythological imagery and his inventive approach to ceramics as both object and image.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
