Lithograph in black and red, on BFK Rives paper - Hand-signed by artist; from the series of Free South Africa Published by the Edition Schellmann, Munich and New York // 'Untitled 2 (from Free South Africa)' by Keith Haring, created in 1985, is a powerful lithograph addressing themes of oppression and resistance during the apartheid era. The composition is divided into two panels, both depicting a massive black figure dominating a smaller white figure, connected by a chain-like tether. In the first panel, the white figure resists, while in the second, it lies defeated. Vibrant red accents, including crosses, amplify the drama and urgency of the imagery. Measuring 101 x 81 cm, this piece exemplifies Haring’s use of bold graphic language to deliver potent political messages with clarity and impact.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
