Woodcut on three sheets of paper // Keith Haring's Totem (1989) is a striking woodcut print created on three sheets of paper, measuring an impressive 79.25 by 35 inches. The artwork features a vertical, symmetrical figure reminiscent of tribal and indigenous motifs, rendered in Haring’s iconic bold lines and symbols. The figure is divided into sections, with red and black elements that contrast sharply against the white background, creating a sense of both movement and balance. The simplified forms, including eyes, geometric shapes, and Haring's signature playful lines, evoke a blend of ancient cultural iconography and contemporary pop art. This piece highlights Haring's ability to merge spiritual and primitive imagery with his distinctive, modern visual language.

What is East Village Art?
In 1981, Patti Astor opened the first art gallery in New York City's East Village, helping to launch the careers of various artists and musicians. The gallery started small but quickly gained popularity, contributing to the emergence of art movements such as Neo-Expressionism and Street Art in the area. The East Village became a hub for these new artistic expressions. However, the gallery closed in 1985 due to waning interest.
