Black/white lacquer on Color photography. MV. 20 by Gerhard Richter, created in 2011, exemplifies the artist’s ongoing investigation into the intersections of photography and painting. This small, unique work features a found color photograph overpainted with black and white lacquer, partially obscuring and distorting the original image. The abstract forms, layered atop what appears to be an urban interior or architectural scene, create a tension between recognition and erasure. Richter’s overpainted photographs challenge the reliability of photographic truth, introducing painterly spontaneity to a mechanical medium. In this intimate format, the work invites close viewing and contemplation of memory, perception, and visual interference.

What is photorealism?
Photorealism is a genre of art or artistic movement that involves drawing, painting, and other graphic media in which the artist carefully studies a photograph and attempts to reproduce it as realistically as possible in another medium. While the term can broadly describe any artwork created in this manner, it specifically refers to a group of painters and paintings in the U.S. art movement that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
