Offset print in yellow, red, blue and black after a photograph by the gallery owner Heiner Friedrich of Brigid Polk. - Signed in pencil, dated on the reverse, stamped on the reverse. Heiner Friedrich by Gerhard Richter, created in 1970, is an offset print in yellow, red, blue, and black, based on a photograph by Heiner Friedrich of Brigid Polk. The work measures 42.5 × 31.5 cm and is from an edition of 250. Rendered with a hazy, diffused quality, the portrait dissolves the facial features into a luminous blur of color and shadow. Richter’s process—translating a photograph through a grainy, layered offset technique—transforms the subject’s identity into a ghostly presence. The result is a meditation on the fragility of memory and the instability of photographic truth, capturing not the clarity of a likeness but the aura of a fading moment.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
