Sculpture, bespoke case and bottle for La Grande Dame 2012 designed by Yayoi Kusama - Signed, numbered and dated in the packaging // Yayoi Kusama's My Heart That Blooms in the Darkness of Night is a vibrant mixed-media sculpture created in 2020, surrounding a bottle of La Grande Dame 2012 champagne. The piece features Kusama's signature polka dots and floral motifs, rendered in bright, playful colors—greens, oranges, reds, and blues. The flowers, with their large, petal-like shapes, seem to wrap around the bottle, almost as if they are growing organically from it. This dynamic composition fuses nature with everyday objects, embodying Kusama's themes of infinity and transformation. The polka dots add a sense of whimsy, while the title hints at something more profound, suggesting growth and vitality even in darkness.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
