Etching in colors on wove paper. Edition of 76 (plus 18 artist's proofs), numbered in pencil lower left. Published and printed by 2RC Edizioni d'Arte/Vigna Antoniniana Stamperia d'Arte, Rome. Sheet size: 91.8 x 100.3 cm (36 1/8 x 39 1/2 in) Image size: 59.4 x 66.4 cm (23 3/8 x 26 1/8 in) Frame size: 101.0 x 109.2 cm (39 3/4 x 43 in)// Untitled Red (American Foundation) is a commanding etching in colours on wove paper, published and printed by the renowned 2RC Edizioni d'Arte in Rome. A luminous field of red — Francis's most emotionally charged hue — dominates the sheet, modulated by subtle layered passages that create an internal glow reminiscent of stained glass. The etching technique yields a surface quality distinct from his lithographic and aquatint work, the bitten line adding a material directness that anchors the colour in physical process. From an edition of seventy-six plus eighteen artist's proofs, this print bridges Francis's Californian light-saturated sensibility with the refined European printmaking tradition of his Italian publisher.

What is Tachisme?
Tachisme is a French abstract painting style that gained popularity between 1940 and 1950, often seen as the European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism. However, there are stylistic differences between the two. Tachisme, which emerged from Art Informel, rejected geometric abstraction in favor of more intuitive and spontaneous expression. It was a reaction against the structured forms of Cubism and is closely related to Informalism. Tachisme emphasizes gestural brushwork, irregular forms, and a focus on the process of painting itself.
