Woodcut on paper - Suite: Apartment - Hand signed and numbered by the artist // Julian Opie's Apartment 12 (2021) is a minimalist woodcut print that showcases his characteristic style of using clean lines and simple forms to depict urban architecture. The artwork presents a linear and stylized view of a modern apartment building, with a repetitive pattern of windows and balconies arranged symmetrically. The use of black and white creates a striking contrast, emphasizing the geometric structure and uniformity of the building. Opie’s precise, reductive approach strips the subject down to its essential elements, evoking a sense of order and rhythm typical of urban landscapes. The piece is part of the Apartment suite and is hand-signed and numbered, reinforcing its value as a collectible edition. This print exemplifies Opie’s ongoing exploration of contemporary life and architecture through a minimalist and graphic lens.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
