Woodcut and collograph with hand-painting // Jim Dine’s Blue Vienna (2013) is a powerful mixed media piece that combines woodcut, collography, and hand-painting to create a richly textured and visually striking image. The artwork centers on one of Dine’s signature motifs—a bathrobe—depicted in deep blue tones, contrasted against a vibrant red background. The robe, rendered in expressive strokes and layered textures, seems to pulse with energy, while the surrounding red creates a dramatic contrast, emphasizing the robe’s form and presence. The intricate detailing and rough, almost abstract, quality of the piece speak to Dine’s fascination with everyday objects imbued with personal meaning. The recurring bathrobe motif is symbolic of identity, intimacy, and memory, themes that frequently appear in Dine’s work.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
