Offset Lithograph Signed in plate, Richter, X '66. Elizabeth 1 (1966) by Gerhard Richter is an offset lithograph that exemplifies his early interest in blurring photographic images to interrogate perception and memory. The work reproduces a press photo of Queen Elizabeth II, rendered in hazy greyscale that obscures facial detail and elevates the ordinary into an enigmatic icon. By softening the image to near abstraction, Richter transforms a familiar media portrait into a contemplative meditation on visibility, recognition, and the transient nature of photographic truth. Signed in plate, edition of 50.

What is photorealism?
Photorealism is a genre of art or artistic movement that involves drawing, painting, and other graphic media in which the artist carefully studies a photograph and attempts to reproduce it as realistically as possible in another medium. While the term can broadly describe any artwork created in this manner, it specifically refers to a group of painters and paintings in the U.S. art movement that emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
