Gerhard Richter’s Cage 1-6 series of abstract giclée prints with textured layers of green, blue, gray, and yellow tones.

Diasec-mounted Giclée print on aluminium composite panel - Numbered and stamped by the publisher on the label label (verso) // Gerhard Richter’s Cage 1-6 (2020) is a series of six limited edition giclée prints that embody Richter's mastery of abstract expressionism and his innovative use of texture and color. Each panel in the series presents layers of paint applied with a squeegee technique, resulting in a complex interplay of colors—ranging from cool greens and blues to muted grays and subtle yellows. The works convey a sense of movement, as if the colors are being dragged and blurred across the surface, capturing both spontaneity and control. Inspired by the music of composer John Cage, this series reflects an abstract, rhythmic quality, where the random yet deliberate application of paint mirrors the experimental nature of Cage’s compositions. The mounting on aluminum composite panels gives the work a sleek, contemporary finish, reinforcing its dynamic visual impact.

What is Nouveau Realism?

Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
