Lithograph on wove paper. Signed 'Carmen Herrera' and numbered on a gallery label affixed to the back of the print. // A single bar of saturated cadmium red descends vertically through a horizon line that divides white from deep graphite grey, the red form imperceptibly tapering as it falls. Nothing else is needed. Herrera began making pictures of this clarity decades before the art world caught up, and her late lithographs — issued in mature signature, numbered on a gallery label affixed to the verso — distil her lifelong commitment to pure line, geometry and saturated colour. To acquire a Herrera is to bring home one of the most quietly radical voices of twentieth-century abstraction.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
