Sculpture with steel bar. Printed recto-verso. // Couleur à l'espace Ariel by Carlos Cruz-Diez, created in 2011, is a sculptural object that exemplifies the artist’s pioneering work in color theory and kinetic art. This piece consists of a tall rectangular panel with vibrant vertical lines in red, green, and blue printed on both sides. The panel is held upright by a steel bar and mounted on a circular black base, allowing viewers to experience the interplay of colors from various angles. As light interacts with the vertically striped pattern, the colors appear to shift and blend, creating a dynamic optical effect that changes with the viewer's movement. Standing at 52 cm tall and part of a limited edition of 75, this work invites viewers to explore the transformative nature of color and perception, central to Cruz-Diez's artistic vision.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
