// Couleur Additive Gris Dos by Carlos Cruz-Diez, created in 2017, is a lithograph that exemplifies the artist’s fascination with color perception and optical effects. The piece features a dense arrangement of vertical lines in varying shades of gray and black that seem to vibrate and shift as the viewer moves. The subtle gradations and precise spacing of the lines create an illusion of depth and motion, giving the work a kinetic quality that changes based on the viewer’s perspective. Cruz-Diez, a prominent figure in kinetic and Op Art, uses minimal elements to manipulate visual perception, making the static image feel dynamic and alive. Measuring 60 cm by 60 cm, this work immerses viewers in an experience where color and form continuously interact, challenging traditional concepts of visual stability.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
