'Cerámico #4' by Carlos Cruz-Diez is a ceramic work measuring 40 × 40 × 4 cm, comprising densely packed vertical stripes in alternating bands of blue, green, salmon-orange, and near-black. The upper-left quadrant shifts into darker, cooler tones — navy and deep teal — while the lower-right opens into warmer oranges and greens, producing a strong sense of spatial recession without any perspective drawing. The 4 cm depth of the ceramic substrate gives the work a physical presence that flat painting cannot replicate, and the hard, reflective surface sharpens the optical contrast between adjacent colour bands. Cruz-Diez spent decades investigating how colour behaves as an autonomous phenomenon rather than a descriptive tool — what he called 'physichromie' — and this ceramic series extends that research into a durable, tactile medium.
