'Tube' by Arnulf Rainer is an etching from a numbered edition, hand-signed in pencil, produced across a span that runs from 1966/67 to 1986. The plate prints a dense, near-uniform field of dark grey-black, its surface marked by faint horizontal striations that reveal the physical pressure of the intaglio process. A thin halo of warm, uninked paper bleeds through at the top and bottom edges of the rectangle, giving the form a subtle atmospheric boundary rather than a hard border. Rainer co-founded the Hundgruppe in Vienna and built his reputation on acts of obliteration and overpainting — applying layer upon layer until the original image is suppressed but not entirely erased. 'Tube' extends that logic into printmaking: the plate is worked to a near-total blackness, yet the etching's own texture resists complete closure, holding a trace of process beneath the surface.
