'Red Wave' by Arnulf Rainer is a 2017 etching measuring 49.5 × 65.8 cm, from a hand-numbered edition. A dense rectangle of red fills the sheet, its surface traced with arcing, overlapping lines that sweep from the lower edges toward the centre, creating a subtle convex swell. The mark-making is visible and physical — closer to drawing than to flat printing. This tactile quality connects directly to Rainer's sustained practice of overworking surfaces, a method he famously described as a way of uncovering identities that pure muscular gesture alone could not reach. Co-founder of the Viennese Hundgruppe alongside Brauer and Mikl, Rainer has long treated the physical act of application — whether on photographs, paintings, or as here, a printed matrix — as the primary site of meaning. Red Wave channels that same impulse into a single, compressed colour field.
