Wayne Thiebaud's Untitled (Sketch of Sitting Figures), 1980, conte crayon drawing, minimal blue outlines of abstract figures on paper.

Conte Crayon on paper - Two-sided drawing - Not signed - Publications: California, John Natsoulas Center for the Arts, 90 years of Thiebaud, October-November 2019 // Wayne Thiebaud's Untitled (Sketch of Sitting Figures) is a delicate and minimal drawing executed in conte crayon on paper. This simple, blue-toned sketch offers a glimpse into Thiebaud’s exploration of human figures and spatial relationships. The composition features a loosely rendered figure in the foreground, with additional figures faintly outlined in the background. The sketch's simplicity, devoid of any detailed features, leaves much to the viewer's interpretation while still evoking a sense of space and form. The use of soft, continuous lines reflects Thiebaud’s artistic sensibility and his ability to capture depth and movement with minimal marks. Though unsigned, this two-sided drawing was included in the 90 Years of Thiebaud exhibition at the John Natsoulas Center for the Arts, reflecting the ongoing appreciation of Thiebaud's unique vision and minimalist approach to figuration.

What is Bay Area Figurative Art ?

The Bay Area Figurative Movement, which also goes by the names Bay Area Figurative School, Bay Area Figurative Art, or Bay Area Figuration, came to existence in San-Francisco Bay Area. This was in the mid-20th century, when a group of artists from the area stopped working on the then popular Abstract Expressionism for a preference to figuration in painting. The movement lasted a total of two decades during the 1950's and 1960's.
