Roy Lichtenstein – Water Lilies with Cloud, 1992 – Screen-print

Screenprinted enamel on processed and swirled stainless steel, with painted wood frame.

'Water Lilies with Cloud' by Roy Lichtenstein is a large-format screen-print measuring 166.4 × 113.7 cm, produced in 1992. Lily pads rendered in teal diagonal stripes float across the upper register, anchored by a red and a green bloom against a flat yellow band of sky. Below, vertical columns of navy, teal dot-screens, diagonal hatching, and metallic-effect patterning fracture the pond's surface into competing graphic zones — a cloud formation sits low in white outlined curves, and a second water lily with blue petals appears mid-composition. Lichtenstein's signature vocabulary — Ben-Day dot fields, thick black contours, and unmodulated flat colour — here collides with the very subject Monet spent decades rendering in dissolved, trembling light. That tension is deliberate: throughout his career, Lichtenstein repeatedly targeted canonical works of Western painting, subjecting them to the mechanical reproduction logic of commercial print. The result is less homage than critical re-framing, scaling the intimate to near-monumental.

Roy Lichtenstein (United States, 1923–1997) was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, renowned for his comic strip-inspired paintings that parodied popular culture. His works, such as 'Whaam!' and 'Drowning Girl,' utilized bold colors and Ben-Day dots to mimic commercial printing techniques, challenging traditional art boundaries.

What is site specific art?

What is site specific art?

Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
