Etching on BFK Rives. Hand-signed by artist. Published by Galleria Schwarz, Milan. From the International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving: The International Avant-Garde: America Discovered, Volume 5. // An old American wall plate with a single toggle switch is drawn with deliberate precision, the toggle pushed up to ON, fastened with two screws above and below. The plate sits within a hand-drawn rectangular frame, the line-work bitten cleanly into the BFK Rives sheet. Pencil signed rfL Lichtenstein and dated 1962, numbered 55/60, published by Galleria Schwarz, Milan. A rare early etching from the first decade of his Pop work, this is Lichtenstein at the laboratory phase of his graphic vocabulary — a serious acquisition for any committed Pop collection.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
