Roy Lichtenstein – Before The Mirror, 1975 – Mixed Media

Lithograph and screenprint with embossing on RFK Rives paper. Hand-signed and numbered in pencil.

'Before The Mirror' by Roy Lichtenstein is a mixed media work from 1975 measuring 108.6 × 81.3 cm. A yellow teapot and a cylindrical glass vessel occupy the foreground, rendered in Lichtenstein's signature flat planes of yellow, cobalt blue, and black, with crisp outlines and diagonal hatching standing in for shadow and reflection. The striped patterning across the background simultaneously depicts a mirror's surface and functions as pure graphic rhythm. Lichtenstein was a central figure of American Pop Art, and this still life demonstrates his sustained method of borrowing the visual shorthand of commercial printing — bold outlines, restricted primaries, mechanical texture — and applying it to subjects drawn from the domestic interior rather than mass-media imagery. The work sits within his broader series of mirror paintings, in which reflective surfaces became a vehicle for examining how images represent other images.

Roy Lichtenstein (United States, 1923–1997) was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, renowned for his comic strip-inspired paintings that parodied popular culture. His works, such as 'Whaam!' and 'Drowning Girl,' utilized bold colors and Ben-Day dots to mimic commercial printing techniques, challenging traditional art boundaries.

What is appropriation?

What is appropriation?

Appropriation in art involves using pre-existing images or objects with little or no modification. This technique has played a significant role across various art forms, including visual arts, music, performance, and literature. In visual arts, appropriation refers to the practice of adopting, sampling, recycling, or borrowing elements—or even entire forms—of existing visual culture, integrating them into new works to create meaning or critique.
