Petit Soleil

Pablo Picasso's Visage, a hand-painted ceramic bowl with a stylized face in black, green, and earthy tones, inscribed Edition Picasso/Madoura.

White earthenware ceramic bowl, glazed and hand-painted engobe - Inscribed 'Edition Picasso/Madoura' (bottom) - 5 in. (12.8 cm) diameter Catalogue: A.R. 290 // Visage by Pablo Picasso, created in 1955, is a hand-painted ceramic bowl that exemplifies Picasso’s exploration of ceramics in the latter part of his career. The bowl is made of white earthenware, glazed and decorated with engobe (a type of slip used in ceramics) in black, green, and earthy tones. At the center of the bowl is a stylized face, a recurring motif in Picasso’s work, surrounded by abstract shapes that resemble leaves or floral patterns. The simplistic yet expressive depiction of the face and the radiating patterns give the piece a sense of both playful charm and sophistication. The bowl is inscribed with Edition Picasso/Madoura on the bottom, referencing the famed Madoura pottery workshop where Picasso collaborated to create many of his ceramic pieces. This piece is part of an edition of 500 and has a diameter of 12.8 cm.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
