Nue Au Faubourg St. Honoré

Pablo Picasso ceramic Picador Ashtray, 1952, featuring a bold black silhouette of a horse-mounted bullfighter on white earthenware.

Original white earthenware with oxidized paraffin decoration and enamel Published by Madoura Pottery Glazed manufacturer's mark to underside Edition Picasso Ramie 176 Pablo Picasso’s Picador Ashtray (1952) is a striking ceramic piece from his extensive collaboration with Madoura Pottery. The design, created in a rare limited edition of 500, features a bold, fluid depiction of a picador—a horse-mounted bullfighter—painted in oxidized paraffin on white earthenware. The figure, rendered with Picasso’s signature gestural strokes, conveys movement and energy, reminiscent of his lifelong fascination with Spanish bullfighting. The circular form of the ashtray enhances the dynamic composition, while the enamel finish gives it a refined, glossy appearance. Stamped with the Edition Picasso and Madoura marks on the underside, this piece is a testament to Picasso’s innovative approach to ceramics, merging traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic expression.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
