Raphäel et la Fornarina, XIL Le pape est bouche bèe dans son fauteuil, Pl.306 from 'Series 347'

Pablo Picasso’s Peintre devant son Chevalet, 1927 etching, features a seated painter working on his easel and a draped model observing.

Etching on wove paper // Pablo Picasso’s Peintre devant son Chevalet (1927) is a delicate etching that explores the intimate relationship between the artist and the muse. Created as part of the series for Le Chef-d'Œuvre Inconnu (The Unknown Masterpiece), the composition portrays a seated painter focused on his easel, while a partially draped model gazes outward. Picasso employs his signature fluid lines and minimalist style, emphasizing the psychological connection and creative tension between the subjects. The scene's simplicity belies its conceptual depth, reflecting Picasso's fascination with the creative process. Printed on wove paper, this work is from an edition of 99 and measures 13 x 19.6 inches.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
