This artwork is part of Picasso’s renowned La Suite Vollard series, commissioned by art dealer Ambroise Vollard and produced between 1930 and 1937. The etching captures two bathers in a fluid, organic style, blending classical figures with Picasso's distinct, modernist interpretation. The scene exudes movement and intimacy, with one bather playfully surprised, suggesting a moment of spontaneity in a natural setting. This piece reflects Picasso’s exploration of form and emotion through delicate linework and a composition that merges realism with abstraction.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
