Pablo Picasso etching Le festin shows intertwined classical figures at a banquet table with wine cups and stylized gestures.

From Lysistrata Portfolio. Literature: Bloch 272, Baer 392, Cramer bk. 24. Etching on Arches paper, signed in pencil and numbered from 150 (there was also a book edition of 1,500). Published by The Limited Editions Club, New York. Printed by Lacourière, Paris, with full margins. Plate 8 3/4 x 6in (22.2 x 15.2cm) Sheet 15 1/16 x 11in (38.3 x 27.9cm) Le festin, plate 6 from Lysistrata (1934), is an etching by Pablo Picasso created for Aristophanes’ comedic play and published by the Limited Editions Club. Executed with fine, fluid line work on Arches paper, this etching depicts a sensual banquet scene, rendered in a neoclassical style that evokes ancient Greek pottery. The composition is densely populated, with intertwined figures sharing drink and affection, echoing the themes of desire and tension central to Lysistrata. Picasso’s linear precision balances eroticism with humor, transforming classical mythology into a modern visual satire. This work was printed by Lacourière in Paris and is signed and numbered in pencil.

What is Cubism?

Cubism is an art movement that aimed to depict multiple perspectives of objects or figures within a single picture. Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso pioneered this style around 1907. The name Cubism emerged from their use of geometric shapes and outlines that often resembled cubes, breaking objects down into abstracted forms.
