Literature: Cramer 151; Bloch 2014; Baer 1989. Image: 11.8 by 9 cm / Sheet: 30 by 23 cm. // A spectral bearded face materialises from deep black aquatint, the features modelled in luminous reserve against an enveloping darkness that suggests both Old Master chiaroscuro and the nocturnal intensity of Picasso's late graphic imagination. This 1971 aquatint, published to accompany deluxe copies of the monograph on Barcelona's historic Hospital de Santa Creu i de Sant Pau, finds Picasso in an introspective vein, the hat-wearing bust evoking Rembrandt and seventeenth-century portraiture. The reversal of light and dark — white emerging from black rather than drawn upon white — gives the image an almost photographic presence. Signed by the artist in red crayon, this impression from an edition of 182 is a powerful example of Picasso's ceaseless reinvention in the printmaking medium.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
