Signed low right. Published by G. Cramer, Geneva. Image 30 x 23.5 cm Sheet 52 x 37.5 cm. Marc Chagall’s Le Peintre, from Songes (1981), is an etching with aquatint in colours that presents a richly imaginative scene centered on the act of creation. A seated painter bends toward his canvas, surrounded by floating figures, animals, and fragments of memory that seem to emerge from his mind. The composition blends fine linear drawing with soft tonal washes, creating depth and a dreamlike atmosphere. Published by G. Cramer in Geneva in a limited edition, the work reflects Chagall’s late exploration of the artist as a visionary figure, where reality and imagination intertwine.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
