Hand-colored etching. Monogrammed M.Ch. Marc Chagall’s Sacrifice of Manoah (1956) is a hand-colored etching that reinterprets a biblical scene from the Book of Judges. The composition shows the moment Manoah and his wife witness the angel ascending from their sacrificial flame. With Chagall’s dreamlike sensibility, the angel appears with vivid blue wings, while the earthbound figures below are rendered in deep blacks and purples. The etching combines the spiritual and the surreal, evoking themes of divine mystery, faith, and revelation. The soft washes of watercolor heighten the emotional and visionary quality typical of Chagall’s religious works.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
