250 unnumbered copies. Unsigned. With center fold (as published). Catalogue raisonné Mourlot 314. Marc Chagall’s Printemps au Pré (Spring in the Meadow), created in 1961 for the celebrated illustrated edition of Daphnis and Chloe, embodies the dreamlike poetry that defines the artist’s work. Executed as a vibrant color lithograph, the composition unfolds in a luminous field of reds and pinks populated by floating figures, birds, blossoms, and a fantastical green animal. At its center, an ethereal female figure appears suspended between earth and sky, evoking themes of love, fertility, and renewal drawn from the ancient pastoral romance by Longus. Chagall’s fluid lines and radiant colors dissolve the boundaries between reality and imagination, transforming the landscape into a vision of emotional and spiritual harmony. Published with the characteristic center fold of the book edition, the print belongs to one of the most acclaimed graphic projects of Chagall’s career.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
