Laser-cut relief in black mounted to white museum board. Signed, dated and numbered. Walking in Melbourne 6 by Julian Opie, created in 2018, is a laser-cut relief artwork featuring six stylized human figures in motion. Mounted on white museum board, the 160 × 64.1 cm piece captures fleeting street scenes using minimalistic black silhouettes. True to Opie’s iconic visual language, the figures are reduced to essential forms, yet remain expressive—defined by posture, clothing, and gesture. The work reflects urban rhythm and anonymity, emphasizing shared human activity while stripping away individual identity. Part of an edition of 45, it offers a contemplative take on contemporary city life.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
