Mr. Blue, Mr. Orange, Mr. Brown, Mr. Green

Günther Förg's Mr. Blue, 2002 mixed media, three copper-toned shapes on deep blue background, minimalist design with contrasting textures.

Tempera on copper on panel. 40.3 x 29.5 x 2.3 cm. Signed and numbered on edition label verso. Numbered - The edition was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Günther Förg. To the builders" // Mr. Blue by Günther Förg, created in 2002, is a limited edition mixed media piece that combines tempera on copper against a deep blue panel. The composition features three elongated, copper-toned shapes arranged vertically, each with a soft metallic sheen that contrasts strikingly with the rich blue background. These organic forms, with their subtle variations in curvature and tone, appear almost sculptural as they interact with light, creating depth and texture. Förg’s minimalist approach in Mr. Blue emphasizes the tactile and visual contrasts between the vibrant blue and the warm metallic surface, encouraging viewers to reflect on simplicity and the dynamic interplay of material and color. This work exemplifies Förg’s exploration of abstraction and form.

What is minimalism?

Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
