Carlos Cruz-Diez Stèle horizontale 15 ceramic plate with alternating yellow and orange bands on metal base

Ceramic plate on a metal base. Signed and numbered at the back. // Stèle horizontale 15 by Carlos Cruz-Diez, created in 2013, is a striking piece that exemplifies the artist’s mastery in kinetic and optical art. Composed of a ceramic plate mounted on a metal base, the artwork is an exploration of visual dynamism and color perception. The long, rectangular form features alternating bands of yellow, orange, and dark tones that appear to vibrate and shift as the viewer moves, creating a mesmerizing optical effect. Cruz-Diez's work often investigates how color behaves independently of form, and this piece invites viewers to engage directly, observing how the colors interact to produce motion within stillness. The limited-edition nature, with the piece signed and numbered on the back, adds to its collectible appeal.

What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
