Carlos Cruz-Diez Caura-5 lithograph with vertical lines in blue, orange, and brown creating a dynamic, shifting optical effect.

// Carlos Cruz-Diez's Caura-5, a limited edition lithograph from 2015, embodies the artist's profound engagement with optical and kinetic art. Known for his exploration of color as an autonomous reality, Cruz-Diez employs vertical, parallel lines in shades of blue, orange, and brown, which seem to vibrate and shift as the viewer’s perspective changes. This optical interplay creates a dynamic experience, as the colors and forms appear to move and blend, challenging perception and inviting a sense of immersion. Cruz-Diez’s work is celebrated for its ability to manipulate light and color, and Caura-5 stands as a testament to his skill in engaging viewers with ever-evolving, perceptual art.

What is Hard Edge Art?

Hard Edge art is a style of abstract painting that became popular in the 1960s. It features areas of color separated by crisp, sharp edges that are painted with geometric precision. The term hard-edge painting was coined by art critic Jules Langsner to describe this approach, which contrasts with the softer, more fluid forms of other abstract styles.
