Thiebaud Wayne – Glassed Candy from the Presidential Portfolio, 1980 – Lithograph

Lithograph in colors on Rives BFK paper.

'Glassed Candy from the Presidential Portfolio' by Wayne Thiebaud is a lithograph from 1980, measuring 76.2 × 55.9 cm and drawn from a hand-numbered edition. A glass jar sits bisected by a horizontal shelf line, its upper half above the surface and its lower half rendered in reflection below. Four rolled candies — two striped diagonally in orange and white, one in blue and white, one in vertical black and white — fan outward from the container. Thiebaud builds the image in orange, blue, and black, with loose crayon-like hatching filling the background shelf. Throughout his career, Thiebaud returned obsessively to ordinary commercial objects — candy counters, diner displays, packaged goods — treating them with the same formal seriousness he brought to portraiture. This lithograph carries that same impulse into the print medium, where the layered color separations reinforce the object's graphic, almost display-window presence.

What is figurative art?

Sometimes known as Figurativism, figurative art refers to sculptures and paintings that are clearly or specifically derived from real objects, making them representational. The term figurative art is often used in contrast to abstract art. However, since the emergence of abstract art, figurative art has come to describe any form of modern art that has strong references to the real world or actual situations.
