Original drypoint printed in colors on Somerset wove paper. Edition of 50, numbered in pencil lower left. Published by Crown Point Press, San Francisco; printed by Lawrence Hamlin at Crown Point Press. Sheet size: 45.7 x 50.8 cm (18 x 20 in) Image size: 22.9 x 30.5 cm (9 x 12 in) Frame size: 55.2 x 60.0 x 3.8 cm (21 3/4 x 23 5/8 x 1 1/2 in)// In this intimate drypoint, three cows ascend a steep, sunlit hillside in close single file, their forms rendered with Thiebaud's characteristic warmth and understated humour. The rich, layered colour — earthy browns, pale yellows, and soft blues — is built through the drypoint's velvety burr, lending the pastoral scene a tactile luminosity. The steeply raked diagonal composition creates a sense of quiet movement and rural rhythm that is unmistakably Thiebaud. A beautiful example of his late printmaking, this work distils the Californian landscape tradition into a scene of gentle, affectionate observation that rewards sustained looking.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
