Untitled III from We Are the Square Jocular Clan

Takashi Murakami, Untitled II from We Are the Jocular Clan, lithograph; overlapping red and blue forms with cartoon eyes, colorful jagged mouth on pink background.

Publisher: Kaikai Kiki Co. -Suite of We Are the Jocular Clan -Four Color Offset Lithograph on Wove Paper -Hand Signed by Murakami // Takashi Murakami’s Untitled II from We Are the Jocular Clan (2018) is a limited edition lithograph that radiates playful chaos. Produced by Kaikai Kiki Co. and hand-signed by Murakami, this circular print showcases vibrant colors and exaggerated shapes typical of his superflat aesthetic. Dominating the composition are two overlapping red and blue forms with cartoonish eyes, set against a pink background with a jagged, colorful mouth and swirling patterns above. The sharp contrasts and bold shapes encapsulate Murakami’s exploration of consumerism and pop culture, merging kawaii (cute) elements with a subtly unsettling expression. This piece embodies Murakami's fascination with the intersection of innocence and intensity in contemporary art.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
