Original serigraph on paper // Tilted by Roy Lichtenstein, created in 1996, is a limited edition serigraph that exemplifies the artist’s signature pop art style, combining bold graphic elements with a serene landscape. The composition features stylized trees on the left side, rendered in dotted patterns, and a sweeping shoreline that leads the viewer’s eye towards a bright yellow sun. The flat, minimalist forms and the use of Ben-Day dots in the sand and water evoke a sense of calm, yet the bold lines and graphic treatment give the piece a modern, commercial quality. The contrast between the natural setting and the highly stylized execution highlights Lichtenstein’s ability to merge fine art with popular visual culture, turning an idyllic landscape into a striking, almost abstract, pop art statement.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
