American Indian Theme V, from the American Indian series - Literature: Corlett 164 - Woodcut in colors on handmade Suzuki paper - Signed in pencil, dated and numbered - With the blindstamp of the publisher/printer, Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York - Image 23 3/16 x 33 5/16in (59 x 84.6 cm) - Sheet 31 7/8 x 41 1/4in (81 x 104.8cm) // Roy Lichtenstein’s 'American Indian Theme V' (1980) is a colorful and dynamic woodcut that belongs to his American Indian series. The composition features bold, graphic elements that are characteristic of Lichtenstein’s pop art style, combining his signature Ben-Day dots and thick black outlines with geometric shapes and patterns. The central figure in the piece is an abstracted face, marked by dashed lines and a mix of sharp and curved forms, evoking both modernist abstraction and indigenous art motifs. The face is juxtaposed with angular, zigzagging designs and diamond shapes, adding a layer of complexity to the composition. The vivid color palette of yellow, blue, red, black, and white further intensifies the visual impact, while the contrast between flat planes of color and intricate textures enhances the depth of the piece. The woodcut technique on handmade Suzuki paper gives the artwork a tactile quality, reflecting Lichtenstein’s experimentation with different printmaking processes. Signed, dated, and numbered by the artist, this work was produced in a limited edition of 50, plus 18 artist proofs, and features the blindstamp of the publisher, Tyler Graphics Ltd., a notable print workshop in New York.

What is site specific art?
Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
