Image: 56.5 × 43.5 cm (22 1/4 × 17 1/8 in) Sheet: 103.5 × 71.8 cm (40 3/4 × 28 1/4 in) Robert Motherwell’s Untitled, from The Basque Suite (1971) is a color screenprint on J.B. Green paper that reflects the artist’s deep engagement with abstraction and political memory. The composition is structured around a bold, gestural black form that cuts across a field of saturated green and red, evoking both landscape and symbolic tension. The stark contrast between the painterly black mark and the flat color planes creates a dynamic interplay between spontaneity and control. Part of The Basque Suite, the work relates to Motherwell’s long-standing response to the Spanish Civil War, where color and form carry emotional and historical resonance. The simplicity of the composition belies its intensity, embodying themes of conflict, presence, and endurance through a refined abstract language.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
