Vacillations (with Watercolor)

Pierre Alechinsky's Seoul, 1988, lithograph, swirling spiral in burgundy with abstract white and black shapes on a yellow background.

// Pierre Alechinsky's Seoul is a dynamic lithograph that exemplifies his mastery in combining abstraction with vivid color and organic forms. The central focus of the composition is a large, swirling, spiral-like circle rendered in rich burgundy tones. Surrounding this powerful vortex are energetic, gestural lines and abstract shapes in white, black, and red, all set against a vibrant yellow background. The jagged, red border encloses the scene, adding to the sense of movement and tension. Alechinsky's use of contrasting colors and textures evokes a sense of chaos and harmony, perhaps referencing the bustling, vibrant energy of the city of Seoul. Signed and dated on the front, this print captures Alechinsky’s characteristic blend of spontaneity and controlled abstraction.

What is the CoBrA movement?

CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
