Etching and aquatint, from the 60 Series. Stamp signed and numbered in pencil. Printed by Crommelynck imprimeur, Paris. Published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris, on wove paper. Image: 22.5 x 32 cm; Sheeo: 38 x 47 cm Literature: B. 1421; Baer: Tome VI 1449 Pablo Picasso’s Sur la scène: viellard barbu s'apprêtant à poignarder une femme dans son lit (1966) is an etching and aquatint from his 60 Series, a body of work that explores themes of drama, violence, and theatricality. Rendered in stark black and white, the composition presents a dramatic scene of an elderly, bearded man poised to stab a woman lying in bed. The intense contrast and expressive linework create a sense of movement and tension, characteristic of Picasso’s later graphic works. Elements of stage-like framing and ornamental details evoke a theatrical performance, blurring the boundary between reality and fiction. Printed by Crommelynck and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, this piece exemplifies Picasso’s mastery of printmaking, where light, shadow, and psychological depth converge.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
