Pablo Picasso's Petit Soleil, a terracotta plaque featuring a sun motif with radiant lines and a central face, inscribed with Edition Madoura details.

Rectangular terracotta plaque with black engobe - Stamped, marked and numbered 'Madoura Plein Feu/Empreinte Originale de Picasso/J.245/62/200 Madoura' (verso) - Catalogue: A.R. 547 // Petit Soleil by Pablo Picasso, created in 1969, is a rectangular terracotta plaque featuring a radiant, sun-like motif. The artwork is crafted from terracotta and coated with black engobe, with the design of the sun etched into the surface, leaving the terracotta exposed in an earthy reddish tone. The circular lines and abstract shapes represent the sun’s rays, radiating from a central face-like figure, a theme commonly explored by Picasso in his later works. This piece exemplifies Picasso’s fascination with combining simple, primitive shapes with expressive symbolism. The back of the plaque is stamped and marked Madoura Plein Feu/Empreinte Originale de Picasso/J.245/62/200 Madoura, authenticating the work as part of an edition of 200 created at the Madoura Pottery workshop, where Picasso frequently collaborated. This plaque measures 10.2 cm by 16.3 cm.

What is Cubism?

Cubism is an art movement that aimed to depict multiple perspectives of objects or figures within a single picture. Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso pioneered this style around 1907. The name Cubism emerged from their use of geometric shapes and outlines that often resembled cubes, breaking objects down into abstracted forms.
