This work presents a classical composition, showing a nude model standing beside a large sculpted head, reminiscent of ancient statues. The etched lines are precise and minimal, emphasizing the balance between the organic form of the human body and the structured, monumental appearance of the sculpted head. Printed by Lacourière and published by Vollard in Paris on Montval laid paper, the piece explores Picasso’s fascination with classical themes, merging them with modernist abstraction. The juxtaposition of the living model and the static sculpture invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between art and life, as well as the passage of time and timeless beauty.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
