Printed on Rives BFK paper, the composition presents two intertwined figures, their bodies rendered in sweeping, continuous lines that emphasize connection and movement. The simplicity of the line work, devoid of shading or detail, draws attention to the figures' forms and the emotional intensity of their embrace. This minimalistic approach enhances the universal themes of love and closeness, inviting viewers to focus on the essence of human connection. Published by Galerie Louise Leiris in Paris in 1967, this work is from a limited edition of 50 and is signed and numbered in pencil by Picasso. L'Etreinte showcases Picasso’s mastery in conveying profound emotion with restrained yet powerful lines.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
