Pablo PICASSO | Le verre d' Absinthe | Etching and Aquatint available for sale on composition gallery

Aquatint in colours, 1972, on Arches wove paper, signed in pencil, numbered on 300pc, printed and published by Atelier Crommelynk, Paris, with their blindstamp, with deckle edges above and below. Plate 495 x 605 mm., Sheet 640 x 798 mm. --Le verre d'Absinthe, 1972 is a limited edition print created using the etching and aquatint techniques. The artwork measures 63 x 83 cm. Etching is a printmaking process that involves incising an image into a metal plate using acid. Aquatint is a technique that creates tonal variations by applying acid-resistant particles to the plate before etching. The resulting print captures the mood and atmosphere of the subject. In this artwork, Picasso explores the theme of absinthe, a green anise-flavored spirit often associated with bohemian culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The title "Le verre d'Absinthe" translates to "The Glass of Absinthe," suggesting a moment of contemplation or perhaps a glimpse into the world of the artists and thinkers who were known to enjoy this beverage.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
