Hand with Fish

Pablo Picasso etching Femme assise et Femme de Dos shows two nude women in linear style, one with swirling lines in her head.

Etching on Montval paper with Picasso watermark, signed in pencil, from the edition of 260 (there was also an edition of 50 with wide margins). Published/printed by Vollard/Lacourière, Paris, 1939. From La Suite Vollard. Literature: Bloch 206, Baer 404. Plate 11 x 7 3/4in (27.9 x 19.7cm) Sheet 17 1/2 x 13 1/4in (44.5 x 33.7cm). Femme assise et Femme de Dos, plate 78 from La Suite Vollard (1934), is a refined etching by Pablo Picasso, printed in 1939 as part of a landmark series commissioned by art dealer Ambroise Vollard. Executed on Montval paper with the artist’s watermark and hand-signed, this work explores classical themes of the nude through the lens of modern abstraction. Two women—one seated, one standing—are rendered in delicate linear contour, stripped of unnecessary detail. The female figure’s profile is gently interrupted by a swirl of looping lines where her brain might be, hinting at Picasso’s interest in psychology and internal worlds. Minimal and intimate, the piece balances elegance and introspection within its spare composition.

What is Cubism?

Cubism is an art movement that aimed to depict multiple perspectives of objects or figures within a single picture. Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso pioneered this style around 1907. The name Cubism emerged from their use of geometric shapes and outlines that often resembled cubes, breaking objects down into abstracted forms.
