Pablo Picasso's 'Cubist Portrait of Kahnweiler' 1964 lithograph with an abstract face formed by geometric shapes and lines, signed by the artist in black ink.

Original lithograph on paper - Published by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler - Suite: Pour Kahnweiler - In excellent condition - Hand signed by Picasso and signed and dated in the plate // Pablo Picasso’s 'Cubist Portrait of Kahnweiler' (1964) is a striking lithograph that embodies the essence of Picasso’s exploration of Cubism. This portrait, dedicated to the influential art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, is rendered with a minimalistic yet impactful composition. The facial features are abstracted into geometric shapes and lines, evoking the fragmented perspectives of Cubism. The texture of the strokes gives the image a raw, almost sketch-like quality, while the subtle facial details—darkened eyes and a lightly drawn mouth—lend an emotional depth to the otherwise abstract portrayal. Picasso’s signature is clearly visible, both in the plate and hand-signed at the bottom of the print, which adds to the personal connection between the artist and his subject, Kahnweiler, who was a significant figure in Picasso’s career. This limited-edition piece, part of the suite Pour Kahnweiler, exemplifies Picasso’s ability to capture the human form through innovative abstraction. The work’s monochromatic palette and the rough, grid-like structure surrounding the face enhance its cubist aesthetic, making it a timeless example of Picasso’s artistic genius.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
