Sheet 29 x 41 1/8 inches (73.6 x 104.4 cm). Literature: DUPIN 415. Couple d'Oiseaux II by Joan Miró is a vibrant 1966 color etching and aquatint that exemplifies the artist’s whimsical abstraction and symbolic vocabulary. Rendered on Mandeure rag paper, the composition features bold black linear forms creating birdlike figures with expressive, wide eyes—one ringed in red, the other in yellow. Splashes of green, blue, and black punctuate the space, while subtle gray washes provide atmospheric depth. The spontaneity of line and color reflects Miró’s playful engagement with the subconscious and nature. Printed and published by Maeght in Paris, this work is signed and numbered in pencil and documented in Dupin 415.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
