Original etching and aquatint with burin and scraper printed in black ink on Montval laid paper bearing the 'Picasso' watermark. Edition of 260 on this paper (plus 50 on wider-margin Montval/Montgolfier paper and 3 on parchment). Plate 26 of 100 from the Suite Vollard. Sheet size: 33.7 x 44.5 cm (13 1/4 x 17 1/2 in) Image size: 23.5 x 29.8 cm (9 1/4 x 11 3/4 in) Frame size: 63.2 x 68.9 x 5.1 cm (24 7/8 x 27 1/8 x 2 in)// Boy and Sleeping Girl with Candle is plate 26 from the legendary Suite Vollard, Picasso's most celebrated body of graphic work. A young boy sits upright beside a sleeping girl, a candle illuminating the scene with a gentle, voyeuristic tenderness. The etching and aquatint, enriched with burin and scraper work, create extraordinary tonal contrasts — deep velvety blacks against luminous white passages — that give the scene an almost theatrical chiaroscuro. Printed on Montval laid paper bearing the 'Picasso' watermark, this impression belongs to the definitive edition published by Ambroise Vollard. It is a work that distils the classical poise and psychological intensity of Picasso's Neoclassical period into one of the Suite's most poignant images.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
